Data Models

Subject: Introductory Database

Overview

In database design, the underlying data model is crucial. The data model describes the logical or physical structure of a database. Evolution of many data models is still ongoing. There are two types of data models: conceptual and physical. Object-based logical model and Record-based model are conceptual data models.

In database design, the underlying data model is crucial. The data model describes the logical or physical structure of a database. A group of conceptual tools known as a data model are used to describe data, data relationships, data semantics, and data restrictions. Since developing a high level data model is the main goal, the evolution of many data models is still ongoing. A significant percentage of the database's semantics should be able to be incorporated into the schema thanks to the model. There are two types of data models: conceptual and physical. An assortment of conceptual tools for representing data, data relationships, data semantics, and consistency requirements make up a conceptual data model. Object-based logical model and Record-based model are conceptual data models.

As a whole, data models are catagorized as follows:

  1. Object-Based Logical Model
    • Entity Relationship (ER) model
    • Object-Oriented Model
  2. Record-Based Model
    • Hierarchical Model
    • Network Model
    • Relational Model
  3. Physical Data Model
