Criteria for Healthful Housing

Definition

A WHO expert Group (1961) defined housing as the 'physical structure that man uses for shelter and the environs of that structure including all necessary services, facilities, equipment and mental health and the social wellbeing of the family and the individual.

Criteria for Healthful Housing

• Physical protection and shelter from heat, cold, humidity, animals, insects, and intruders are provided by healthy housing.
• provide enough area for living rooms according on the number of occupants, the kitchen, guest rooms, study rooms, and places for amusement with sunshine, cross ventilation, and excretory function.
• It should have sufficient lighting and a tube well or tap water supply.
• It is built, maintained, and used in such a way as to stop the spread of communicable diseases.
• It offers defense against the dangers of noise and pollution exposure.
• It is devoid of any hazardous or toxic materials, as well as any unsafe physical arrangements caused by construction or maintenance.
• It fosters social relationships, mental health, and personal and communal growth.
• It need to have a suitable location for collecting and discarding trash.
• It need to have efficient water drainage. Rooms need to be moisture-proof.
• It should have restrooms and latrines that are easily accessible to those living there.
• Rain, sun, wild animals, rodents, and snakes should all be kept out.
