Illusion

Subject: Behavioral Science

Overview

It's a mental phenomenon in which we see something that is so twisted that it doesn't seem genuine. The human brain isn't perfect, and there are moments when it gives a skewed interpretation of sensory data. Perceptual signals are manipulated to fool the brain into believing an object is a different size, shape, or depth than it actually is. There are two main categories of illusion, both of which can be triggered by factors such as eye movement, mood, contrast perception, flaws in the sensory organ, etc. It's a mental phenomenon in which we see something that is so twisted that it doesn't seem genuine. Illusion

It's a mental phenomenon in which a normally recognizable image is warped to the point that it no longer seems genuine. Perception is fallible and can lead to erroneous interpretations of sensory data in some cases. Perceptual signals are manipulated to fool the brain into thinking something is different than it actually is in terms of size, shape, and depth. There are several potential causes of optical illusions, such as rapid eye movement, strong feelings, seeing strong contrast, sensory organ deficiencies, and so on.

Types

  1. Illusion due to physical process
    • The illusion is perceived due to certain physical processes. For e.g. mirage is an optical illusion.
  2. Illusion due to cognitive process
    • In such an illusion individuals simply misinterpreted the situation or stimulus.
  3. Muller-lyer illusion:
    • both arrows headed and feather-headed lines are of the same length but the feather-headed line looks longer.
  4. Ebinghaus illusion:
    • the central are of the same size but one of the left looks bigger of its background.
  5. Ponza illusion:
    • two horizontal lines are of the same length but the upper one appears longer.
  6. Moon illusion:
    • the moon looks bigger horizon is about 30% bigger than at its higher point in the sky.

Questions and Answers

It is a perceptual experience in which we perceive an image as being so strongly distorted that is a reality it cannot and does not exist. Sometimes perception can provide false interpretation of sensory information. Illusions are created by manipulating the perceptual cues so that brain can no longer correctly interpret size, shape, and depth cues.

Illusion may occur because of confusion eye movement, emotion, contrast perception, defects on the sense organ etc. they are two types of illusion.
