Environmental Sanitation and Its Components

Subject: Community Health Nursing I

Overview

Environment

"The total conditions affecting the life and external conditions development of an organism, human behavior, and society" is how the term "environment" is defined. - Ghosh

Sanitation

Sanitation is the study of protecting health. According to the National Sanitation Foundation of the USA, sanitation is: "It is a lifestyle. The clean home, clean farm, clean business, clean neighborhood, and clean community are all examples of the high quality of living." Here, the word "clean" refers to both a clean environment and the absence of any elements that could be harmful to one's health.

Environmental sanitation

Environmental sanitation is "the control of all those factors in man's physical environment that exercise or may exercise a deleterious effect on his physical development, health, and survival," according to a WHO expert committee.

Component of environment

The internal environment and the external environment are the two main parts of the environment. The term "internal environment" refers to the surroundings that exist inside humans and their surroundings. The following elements are included in the external environment:

  • Physical environment: The term "physical environment" refers to the outside, non-living environment, including things like: air, food, water, a house, a job, the weather, etc. Humans regularly come into contact with certain physical factors. The growth, health, and survival of humans may be adversely affected by some or all of these forces. Air pollution, water pollution, noise pollution, urbanization, radiation risks, and other health issues are all caused by man.
  • Biological environment: The biological environment is made up of a person's interactions with other people, animals, insects, parasites, microorganisms, and their level of nutrition. It alludes to the living elements of the outside world of a person.
  • Psycho-social environment: The social environment describes how a person interacts with other people. It is described as "those factors affecting one's own physical well-being, access to health care, and social cohesion that result from one's own psychosocial makeup and from the composition and functions of social groups." It covers traditions, routines, wealth, occupation, religion, standard of living, human behavior, and the accessibility of social, political, and health services.

Identifying environmental health risks and creating and implementing programs for health promotion and treatment are significant contributions that community health nurses can make. These are what they are:

  • Teach people how to protect the environment and minimize pollution.
  • Encourage them to report any indications of disruptions.
  • Implement infectious disease vaccination programs.
  • Give common ailments and injuries the proper care.
  • Promotion of a healthy, wholesome food supply and clean environment.
  • Inform people about the alarming current health issues and the ways to prevent and control them.
