Subject: Geriatric Nursing (Theory)

Overview

Macular Degeneration (AMD) is a disease associated with aging that gradually destroys sharp central vision. AMD affects the macula, the part of the eye that allows us to see fine detail. There is no effective treatment for AMD that restores vision. Laser therapy is used to halt choroidal neovascularization and also halt the progression of established neov vascularization.

Vision impairment

In adults, visual impairment is associated with loss of personal independence and difficulty maintaining employment, often leading to the need for disability pensions, vocational and social services, and nursing homes or assist I’ve living placement. Older adults represent the vast majority of the visually impaired population. For older adults, visual problems have a negative impact on their quality of life equivalent to that of life-threatening conditions such as heart disease and cancer.
