Cognitive Therapy

A psychotherapy strategy known as cognitive therapy is predicated on the notion that conduct is secondary to thought. Our thoughts have an impact on our emotions and moods. Depression is brought on by thought processes that are self-defeating and demeaning of oneself. By reversing this skewed manner of thinking, feeling, and doing, the therapist aids the patient. The cognitive triad is part of the cognitive model of depression:

  • A negative view of self.
  • A negative view of environment.
  • A negative view of the future.

Aim

To treat depression, new cognitive and behavioral responses should be used to replace depressive cognition (ideas) such as hopelessness, worthlessness, helplessness, and pessimism. Because of a changed way of thinking, the person has bad feelings about themselves, expresses helplessness, despair, and a pessimistic perspective of the future, which results in inactivity, which, in turn, results in depressed mood. A prime example of a bad emotion:

  • My child is not doing well at school so; I must be a bad parent.
  • He didn't say good morning to me so he must hate me.
  • He did not say good morning to me so everyone must hate me.
  • I did not get an answer to that exam question right so I am going to fall all my exams.
