Phases

Ventilation/catharsis: The therapist encourages the client to relieve his emotional tensions, internal conflicts, frustration, and unhappiness by expressing his life situations openly so that the client relievers his intense feelings, during this process the therapist play as an active listener by paying positive attention and concentration.

Interpretation: The therapist assists the client to understand the link between his behavioral manifestation and the repressed intrapsychic conflicts. The therapist will analyze the behaviour of the client to formulate the diagnosis and plan of action.

Reeducation: To reduce the accumulation of tension in the unconscious mind the therapist makes the client learn the ways of solving the internal conflicts in a socially acceptable manner.

Limitation of Psychotherapy

  • It is not possible to administer for an uncooperative patient.
  • Difficult in cases of clients as to develop insight into the situation adequate intellectual capacities are essential.

The nurse giving psychotherapy should have the following qualities, she:

  • Should understand the patient's family and cultural background.
  • Should be a good listener.
  • Should be patient, sympathetic, understanding and tactful.
  • Should have an interest and concern for patients problems.
  • Should not too emotionally involved with the patient and his problems.
