Cetrizine

Subject: Basic Science Applied to Nursing

Overview

Cetirizine is an antihistamine that is used to treat histaminic edema, flares, and pruritus. It competes with histamine for binding to H 1 receptor sites on effector cell surfaces. Before performing any actions that require expertise or risk, such as driving or operating heavy machinery, exercise caution.

Cetrizine binds strongly to H1 receptors. It is an antihistamine that does not make you sleepy.

Mechanism of action

It competes with histamine for binding to H 1 receptor sites on the surface of effector cells to diminish histaminic edema, flare, and pruritus.

Indication

  • Allergic Reaction Allergic dermatitis, allergic rhinitis, and persistent nettle rash are some examples.

Dose

  • Adult: 10 mg od for 5-7 days.
  • Child: 2-6years: 2.5mg bd
  • Child: 6-12years: 5mg bd.

Contraindication

  • Narrow-angle glaucoma
  • Urinary retention

Side Effect

  • Constipation, diarrhea, dry mouth, drowsiness, sedation, headache, depression, fatigue, hypotension,

Nursing Consideration

  • It should be taken shortly before night because of its central nervous system depressive effects, such as weariness and hypnotic effects.
  • Because of its sedative and hypnotic properties, it should be used with caution before doing any acts that involve knowledge or risk, such as driving or operating heavy machinery.
  • Keep an eye out for sleepiness and central nervous system depression, especially when combined with other medicines that induce comparable effects and alcohol.
