Overview

A fungus or yeast illness known as thrush affects the mouth. In humid, warm environments, fungus growth is typical. A small amount of this fungus is typical, although it can also develop in the vagina. Thrush is brought on by an overabundance of the Candida fungus in the mouth or throat. Causes

  • Dry mouth
  • Feeling of food stuck in the throat
  • Soreness in teeth
  • Strange or unpleasant taste in mouth
  • Bad breath
  • Oral thrush can also lead to a condition called burning mouth syndrome, which can have symptoms of a painful burning sensation, mouth dryness, soreness, tingle or numbness throughout the mouth and tongue, and sometimes an abnormal bitter or metallic taste in the mouth.

Diagnosis

  • History: 
    • Feeding of baby, nipples sore or painful nipple, review the mouths and baby records.
  • Examination:
    • Observe the baby while breastfeeding
    • Examine the baby mouth
    • Examine the baby buttocks
    • Examine the mother nipple.

Treatment

  • Thrush in baby mouth:
    • Administer of nystatin 100,000units/ml suspension 1-2ml into the mouth 4times per day and continuing until 2 days after the thrush has disappeared
    • Gentian violet 0.5% solution 4 times per day and continuing until 2 days after the thrush has disappeared.
    • Teach mother on a use of a clean separate cloth to apply for medicine in each treatment and discard it after application.
    • Hand washing and proper drying.
  • Thrush in buttock:
    • Apply nystatin cream or gentian violet solution at every diaper change, continuing until 3 days after the rash is gone. Expose the buttocks to air if the temperature is warm enough.
  • Thrush in mother nipple:
    • Apply nystatin cream to her nipples and areola after breastfeeding for as long as the baby is being treated. Ask the mother to keep mothers nipple dry when not feeding and wear loose clothes.

  • Burning mouth syndrome, which can cause intense burning sensations, mouth soreness, tingling or numbness throughout the mouth and tongue, and occasionally an unusually bitter or metallic taste, is another ailment that can result from oral thrush.

Treatment:

  • Thrush in baby mouth:
    • administering nystatin 100,000 units/ml suspension orally four times daily for two days after the thrush has subsided.
      Gentian violet 0.5% solution should be applied four times daily for two days after the thrush has subsided.
      Teach the mother to administer the medication with a clean, separate cloth for each treatment and to throw it away afterward.

  • Thrush in buttock:
    • Every time you change your baby's diaper for the next three days, use nystatin cream or gentian violet solution. If the air is warm enough, expose the buttocks to it.
  • Thrush in mother nipple:
    • For the duration that the baby is receiving treatment, apply nystatin cream to her nipples and areola. Ask the mother to wear loose clothing and to keep her nipple dry when she isn't nursing.
