Coronary Artery Disease

Subject: Medical and Surgical Nursing I (Theory)

Overview

Atherosclerosis, an accumulation of lipid-containing plaque in the arteries, causes coronary artery disease, which is characterized by the constriction or obstruction of one or more coronary arteries. It is a chronic, progressive condition that typically starts in infancy and shows clinical signs in mid- to late adulthood.

The condition results in inadequate myocardial oxygenation and decreased myocardial tissue perfusion. Significant if any major branch has a lumen diameter reduction of at least 75% or the left main artery lumen diameter decreases by at least 50%. HTN, angina, dysrhythmias, MI, heart failure, and death are all caused by CAD.
