We must determine our own values, priorities, and preferences rather than allowing others or society to do it for us.

Good leaders are dedicated: our usage of the term "leadership" can sometimes turn people off. "I can't do that; I have no experience or qualifications," a potential volunteer may think. When what we actually want is a mentor, someone who encourages people to achieve their best, someone who loves and listens, someone who is confident in her beliefs and eager to be there.

Good leaders recognize that they do not know everything: assuming that an effective leader is one who knows everything is one of the most hazardous leadership myths. While the ultimate decision and accountability may rest with one person, it is incumbent upon that person to gather information and trust the perspectives of others before establishing a plan of action.

Good leaders are adaptable: change is one of life's most visible yet most strongly resisted forces. Effective leaders understand the importance of change.
