World Food Programme

Subject: Leadership and Management (Theory)

Overview

It is the world's largest humanitarian agency fighting hunger worldwide. It reaches more than 80 million people with food assistance i 75 countries each year.

Focus Area

  • Climate Action
The World Food Programane is collaborating with local communities, international researchers, and partner governments to analyze and comprehend the effects of climate change. Programs, innovations, policy changes, and technical assistance are all being used to assist those who are most vulnerable in becoming food and climate secure.

  • Disaster reduction
Disasters affect lives and agricultural productivity, causing poverty and hunger. The World Food Programme collaborates with the government and local communities to enhance safety nets, conduct emergency preparedness studies, and implement early warning systems in order to lessen the impact of catastrophes on people's access to food.

  • Gender equality
Only if men, women, girls, and boys have equitable access to food, nourishment, and opportunities will the world sustainably end hunger. resources, By utilizing our food assistance to close the gender gap, the World Food Programme and the rights movement achieve gender equality. One of the main focuses of WFP operations is gender equality and women's empowerment. The organization improves access to food and livelihoods through its work with school meals, smallholder farmers, health, nutrition, and protection programs.

  • Nutrition
In order to provide vulnerable populations with access to nourishing diets, such as women, children, and those getting HIV and tuberculosis treatment, the World Food Programme collaborates with governments and partners. Our programs for providing Specialized Nutritious Foods, fortifying staples, and promoting nutritional variety involve creating and implementing school feeding.

  • Smallholder market support
Small-scale farmers are particularly susceptible to hunger. Together with national governments, the World Food Programme works to create sustainable food systems that better integrate smallholder farmers throughout the value chain. This involves purchasing their WFP programs, exposing them to formal markets, and facilitating access to skills, information, and infrastructure to help people expand their livelihoods and become more risk-resistant.

Nepal Strategic Plan (2019-2023)

With the adoption of a federal democratic republic structure in 2015, Nepal entered a new era and opened up opportunities for the advancement of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The Right to Eat Act guarantees everyone's right to food.

The objective is to incorporate SDG 2 targets into national policies, budgets, and subnational plans in order to increase the coherence of associated efforts in the areas that are being targeted. The WFP's country strategic plan is in line with the recommendations of the zero hunger strategic review to eradicate all hunger by 2030 and is built to work with both the new federal government's structure and the right to food guaranteed by the constitution.

Strategic Development Goals 2 and 17 are addressed by five associated strategic outcomes in the national strategic plan:

  • Strategic outcome 1: Affected populations in Nepal have timely access  to adequate food and nutrition during and in the aftermath of natural disasters and other shocks.
  • Strategic outcome 2: Food-insecure people in targeted areas have improved nutrition throughout the key stages of their lives by 2025.
  • Strategic outcome 3: Vulnerable communities in remote food-insecure areas have improved food security and resilience to climate and other shocks by 2030.
  • Strategic outcome 4: The Government has strengthened capabilities to provide essential food security and nutrition services and respond to crises by 2023.
  • Strategic outcome 5: Government efforts towards achieving zero hunger by 2030 are supported by inclusive and coherent policy frameworks across all spheres of government by 2023.

The Government is assisted in achieving the Strategic Development Goals through this country's strategic plan. The World Food Programme (WFP) anticipates moving away from the direct execution of food security and nutrition programs and toward more specialized technical assistance to the Government and for national programs. Emergency preparedness and response will be a WFP priority due to Nepal's susceptibility to natural disasters; although no operations are presently required under strategic outcome 1, they are included to prepare for potential future responses. Regarding support for women's emancipation through initiatives supporting Strategic Development Goal 2, the Ministry of Women, Children, and Senior Citizens was consulted.

The national action plan for achieving zero hunger and the framework for United Nations development assistance for Nepal for 2018–2022 are both reflected in the country strategic plan, which is also in line with the multi-sector nutrition plan for 2018–2022 (MSNP 11), the development plan for the school sector for 2016–2023, and the 14th three-year plan, which covers 2017–2019.
