Plan International

Plan International has been helping Nepal's underprivileged children, their families, and communities to access their legal rights to life, safety, and participation since 1978. Currently, we manage programs in 8 districts and work with partners in 42 districts around the US.

We want to make a difference in the lives of 1 million Nepalese girls between 2018 and 2022. Our top priorities are:

• Giving boys and girls in their communities an equal opportunity.
• To end child marriage, child trafficking, and child labor, communities must reduce violence against women and girls and oppose discriminatory attitudes and actions.
• Encouraging girls' access to sexual and reproductive health.
• Increasing a community's resistance to natural disasters.

Activities

COVID 19 Response

• Through its response in 9 districts across the nation, Plan International Nepal is collaborating with communities to aid the government in its efforts to contain the COVID-19 outbreak.
• It is coordinating with its development partners to address the COVID-19 epidemic in Nepal. with the following sectors having local government:
  • Early childhood development and education
  • Health and cleanliness
  • Cash exchanges
  • protection of kids.
• With the aid of its emergency response plan, Nepal's most vulnerable populations, including girls, mothers, and children with disabilities, have seen less of the social effects of COVID-19.
• In order to stop the spread of COVID-19, it has provided medical facilities with personal protective equipment and medical supplies. Additionally, Plan International Nepal sent non-food items to communities so they could set up quarantines.

Health

• Through early detection, treatment, and rehabilitation, it aims to reduce maternal and infant mortality rates as well as the prevalence and severity of disabilities.
• It also places a focus on assisting individuals in obtaining utilities like clean water and better sanitation.
• As of today, 560,000 people, 225,000 of whom are children, live in healthy and clean communities thanks to the opening and designation of 39 village development committees (VDCs) as defecation-free last year.

Education

• Its main objective is to make sure that every child has access to a high-quality education.
• Plan International Nepal is the country's leader in education. It is dedicated to improving primary education access, especially for girls, children from impoverished communities, and those with disabilities.
• It strongly emphasizes improving the quality of fundamental education by helping educational institutions put effective kid-friendly, nonviolent teaching techniques into practice.
• The creation of village education committees (VECs), whose members are trained on how to develop village education plans, survey out-of-school children in school catchment areas, and give out-of-school children basic education in both formal and informal settings, has been made possible through close cooperation with local governments.

Earthquake Responses

• In the year following the earthquake, Delivering Emergency Aid Plan International was able to directly aid 287,847 people, including 117,230 children. They have assisted Nepalese children and their families by providing them with access to makeshift schools, child safety services, as well as supplies for temporary shelter, food, and water.
• Child Protection Plan International Nepal has moved swiftly to implement significant safeguards against exploitation, child labor, and trafficking in addition to attending to urgent needs for health, education, and Stra counseling.
• Plan International built kid-friendly places all across the Kathmandu Valley within days of the earthquake, providing children who were displaced by the chaos and tragedy with a secure (PS environment. Additionally, about 45,000 children have received therapy, psychiatric assistance, and emotional support to assist them in coping with the trauma of the earthquake.
• One of Plan International's emergency response techniques has been to establish anti-trafficking checkpoints in key rural areas. Thanks to the collaboration between police and government organizations, many hundred children who were in danger of being trafficked were stopped at these checkpoints and sent back to their villages.

School Construction

• Plan International has constructed 310 temporary schools in communities whose schools have been damaged, enabling 21,021 kids to continue their education in a safe environment.

Priorities Moving Forward

• Twenty new schools will be built, and 1,600 classrooms will be renovated, according to Plan International. These facilities will be "safe schools," built with disaster-resistant materials and fortified with instruction on emergency preparedness for both pupils and staff.
• Additionally, it ensures that the curriculum and teacher training address children's rights, with a focus on females and gender-based violence.
• In order to close the gender gap that still remains in a sizable percentage of Nepal, Plan International's Earthquake Recovery Strategy has gender equality as one of its top priorities.
